I think you’re over-reading Trump’s public message here.

With Trump, what he says after a call and what the U.S. government does are almost never aligned. His public statements are deliberately off-topic, transactional, even trivial — that’s his method, not a sign of misunderstanding.

If Washington actually received a strategic signal from Beijing, there is no world in which Trump would respond publicly with: “Thank you, we’ll tell Japan to calm down.” That’s not how U.S. diplomacy works, especially when an ally is involved.

Trump’s post tells us nothing about what he understood. In fact, the very fact that he avoids China’s historical framing could just as well mean the opposite: he understood perfectly well, and chose not to show it.

What happens behind the scenes — not what Trump tweets — will tell us whether the message landed.

Well, in that instance what happened behind the scene is that he immediately called Japan’s PM to - according to the Japanese transcript of the call - “give a brief explanation of the recent state of U.S.-China relations.“ So maybe you’re right and he did in fact understand 😂

He didn’t choose his parents, nor does anybody else. Hence, Donald is not the problem. We are the problem to allow certain people to rise to power or acquire insane amount of wealth. 8.2 billion people maybe ruled by just 10 thousand very influential persons/families, dictating the future of humanity, using our inherent weaknesses. Donald is a puppet too. Another great distraction to blind the people from seeing what’s behind the scenes.

Profound interpretation.

One does wonder how such a creature managed to survive childhood.

I guess that at this point, the Great Narcissist is looking for praise anywhere he can find it.

Will his Great Farmers provide, or will they be cast into the pit along with all the other traitors?

It's like a real life version of Ricky Gervais in The (pommy) Office. Painful to watch...

Maybe in kind response to the apparent genuine effort with the Russians to end the war. Something that Zelensky and Europe will never sign off on, Being that he lost his MAGA core, and is now listening to war hawks like Graham, I can't see any follow thru with this diplomatic gesturing. You can tell by Trump's demeanor--He's belittling Paul and Massie. It sounds as though he'll never mend fences with them, which may mean he knows, (as do they) that he'll never deliver peace

Your contrast of the way China communicates with America, then vs now, is a subtlety lost to mainstream narratives. Either they see it and don't want to admit it, or they are oblivious.

It seems to me that the American business model is to acquire and assert an advantage over others, and then call it a "free market". China seems aware of the business model on offer, and isn't having it.

I'm not sure Trump can handle the message from China that America has been demoted from #1 to peer or even #2.
